Air pollution and climate change affect each other through complex interactions in the atmosphere
Air pollution is intricately linked with climate change because both problems come largely from the same sources, such as emissions from burning fossil fuels. Both are threats to people’s health and the environment worldwide. As a global health and environmental crisis, air pollution is causing more deaths a year globally than HIV/AIDs and malaria, combined. In addition, air pollution is the third largest risk factor for deaths in children under the age of 5, after malnutrition and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both short- and long-term exposure to air pollution can lead to a wide range of diseases, including stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, trachea, bronchus and lung cancers, aggravated asthma and lower respiratory infections.
